Event Description:
"Hop to It and VOTE!"  Working Ozark Women this month  will be having a celebration of Spring and Suffragettes:
April 7th is Voting Day!
Serve your duty as a citizen and exercise your hard-won right to vote.  Our Christian County Clerk's Office has sample ballots, how to register,  and where to vote on their website: www.christiancountymo.gov/clerk.html.
Polls are open 6am to 7pm in our area.  Each of us can do our part to honor the brave men and women who have fought for our freedom to live in a democracy.  Honor the foremothers who came before you by educating yourselves on the issues and candidates, and then, most importantly,
TAKE PART
in deciding who your local City and County Leaders will be and what measures shall be adopted.    This month's WOW is sponsored by Neatnik Cleaning & Premier Home Healthcare.

The American Suffragette movement has beginnings in Seneca Falls, NY, in 1848 with the first Women's Rights Convention; 24 years later in 1872 the actual 1st Woman to run for President of the United States was Ms. Victoria Woodhull, with Frederick Douglas as her running mate, on the Equal Rights Party Ticket; activists and reformers throughout the United States then spent another 40 years campaigning for the Women's Right to Vote and the many organization came together in 1912-13 to participate in the Suffragette demonstrations held in New York and Washington DC, with Inez Mulholland on horseback.  To wit: an incredible thing happened in May 97 years ago, a Joint Resolution of Congress proposing a constitutional amendment extending the right of suffrage to women on May 19, 1919 was passed.   16 months later the 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920.
The Equal Rights Amendment was also proposed during this time and then to every Congress between 1923 and 1972.  Did you know this amendment is still being debated,  and in our home state of Missouri,  to this day?  Amendment reads "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex."
In 1982 it fell just three states short of ratification and is still not yet in our U.S. Constitution. *
